    Im Unterschied zum Menschen kommt Zahnkaries beim Hund nur sehr selten vor. Eine Studie an 435 Hun- den, vorgestellt in einer auf veterinärmedizinische Zahnheilkunde spezialisierten Praxis, hat gezeigt, dass nur 23 dieser Hunde (5,3 %) Karies aufwiesen (Hale, 1998). Die häufigste Erkrankung der Maulhöhle beim Hund ist die Parodontalerkrankung, und der größte Teil dieses Kapitels befasst sich mit dieser Erkrankung.

    Parodontalerkrankungen

    Eine Parodontalerkrankung (Parodontium = Zahnhalteapparat, bestehend aus Zahnfleisch, Alveo- larknochen, Zahnwurzelhaut und Zahnzement) ist das Ergebnis des Kampfes zwischen Bakterien, die sich an der Oberfläche der Zahnkronen ansammeln (bakterieller Zahnbelag, Plaque) und dem Abwehr- system des Individuums (Abbildung 5).

    > Epidemiologie

    Eine Parodontalerkrankung befällt jeden Hund im Laufe seines Lebens, aber mit unterschiedlicher Prävalenz je nach Rasse und Individuum. Die Ansammlung bakteriellen Zahnbelags (Plaque) an den Zahnoberflächen entlang des Zahnfleischrandes induziert eine entzündliche Reaktion des angrenzenden Zahnfleisches, eine Gingivitis. Im klassischen Fall sind die äußeren Zahnflächen (vestibulär oder bukkal) stärker betroffen als die inneren Flächen (palatinal oder lingual), und ebenso sind die Zähne des Oberkiefers in der Regel hochgradiger betroffen als die des Unterkiefers (Isogai et al., 1989; Rosenberg et al., 1966; Harvey et al., 1994) (Abbildung 6) […]
