    Se combinan dos elementos: por una parte, la necesidad de convertir la relación en ritual (tanto el hombre como el perro son especies sociales) y, por otra parte, la necesidad de controlar dicha relación (sobre todo, a tra- vés del alimento). El desconocimiento de la etología y de la comunicación canina suele ser la causa de que los propietarios se conformen con interpretaciones puramente antropomórficas que originan auténticos contra- sentidos.

    Con demasiada frecuencia, el malentendido se establece en los primeros instantes de la relación (en las primeras semanas de la adopción) cuando el dueño intenta conquistar el afecto de su perro regalándole alimentos. En ese caso, y si su desarrollo ha sido normal hasta entonces, el perro adquiere una imagen errónea de la familia que le acoge. Y, lo que es peor, si esta actitud interviene de forma muy precoz en la vida del cachorro, puede impedir su desa- rrollo armonioso al suprimir las obligaciones sociales indispensables (suprimiendo los fenómenos de autocontrol) que existen en las especies sociales (Moocroft, 1981).
