Phases de recherche, d’identification et de sélection
Le chien se sert de son odorat pour capter les arômes de l’aliment proposé, et de sa sen- sibilité tactile pour juger de la température. C’est l’odorat qui est le sens le plus discriminant à ce stade. Le chien possède 70 à 200 millions de récepteurs olfactifs, contre 5 à 20 chez l’homme (Vadurel & Gogny, 1997). Lorsque le chien renifle, le débit de l’air est de 1 l/sec, soit 10 fois plus que lors d’une inspiration normale (Vadurel & Gogny, 1997).
L’acuité olfactive est maximale quand le chien a faim, elle diminue lorsqu’il est rassasié. L’odorat dimi- nue avec l’âge.
