• En condiciones idóneas, el perro debe mantener un peso estable du- rante el periodo de hospitalización (o aumentarlo si es necesario). Es im- prescindible pesarlo cada día. El so- porte nutricional estará indicado para los pacientes con un periodo de ingesta inadecuada de alimento (real o prevista) de tres o más días.

• La nutrición enteral es, con diferen- cia, la mejor vía para el soporte nutri- cional: evita la atrofia de las vellosi- dades intestinales y facilita una recu- peración más rápida. Cuando no es viable, debe reducirse al mínimo el tiempo durante el que el intestino no recibe alimento.

• Las necesidades energéticas de un perro hospitalizado pueden compararse con las de un perro en reposo.
