Formation du vétérinaire
On ne peut trop souligner l’importance de l’expertise dans ce domaine. Une formation diététique digne de ce nom permet notamment au vétérinaire d’apprendre à prescrire un régime ménager adapté à chaque cas particulier, de formuler des solutions parentérales, et de savoir prendre en charge des cas ne répondant pas aux traitements diététiques classiques comme des chiens présentant plusieurs maladies concomitantes. Les vétérinaires diplômés de l’American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN) ou de l’European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN) offrent de très bonnes références.
La plupart des vétérinaires nutritionnistes réservent l’utilisation d’un régime préparé à la maison:
- aux clients que l’on ne peut dissuader de préparer les repas de leur chien,
- aux chiens présentant plusieurs maladies concomitantes qui ne peuvent être prises en charge de manière appropriée avec les aliments disponibles dans le commerce. […]
