La peau est un organe important tant par sa surface (1 m2 pour un chien de 35 kg) que par ses rôles (social, homéostasie du milieu intérieur, réponse immunitaire...). En constant renouvellement, elle mobilise une grande partie des macro- et micronutriments apportés par l’alimentation.
