Una evaluación inicial exhaustiva, que abarque un hemograma completo, un perfil bio- químico, un análisis y un cultivo de orina y la determinación de la presión arterial, está indicada para planificar el tratamiento de mantenimiento adecuado. Las radiografías o la ecografía abdominal complementarán estos datos analíticos básicos.

Los resultados analíticos confirman una insuficiencia renal cuando se observa azotemia (aumento del BUN y la creatinina), hiperfosfatemia, acidosis metabólica de leve a intensa, hipopotasemia o hiperpotasemia, hipocalcemia o hipercalcemia, anemia, hiperlipidemia, ten- dencia a hemorragias, isostenuria, proteinuria e hipertensión (Tabla 4).
