Für die meisten kardiovaskulären Erkrankungen des Hundes konnten die jeweils verantwortlichen Risi-kofaktoren sowie wichtige klinische Zusammenhänge identifiziert werden. Auch die Rassenprädisposi-tionen für die häufigsten Herzkreislauferkrankungen sind bekannt (T abelle 3). Kleine bis mittelgroßeHunde zeigen häufig eine Prädisposition für erworbene chronische Herzklappenerkrankungen (Endokar-diose), während die dilatative Kardiomyopathie und perikardiale Erkrankungen die häufigsten Ursachenkongestiven Herzversagens bei Hunden großer Rassen darstellen.

Bei bestimmten kardiovaskulären Erkrankungen ist eine Geschlechtsprädisposition bekannt. So kommtein offener Ductus Botalli vorwiegend bei weiblichen Tieren vor, während Rüden eher zur Entwicklungchronischer Klappenerkrankungen, idiopathischer Perikarderkrankungen und bakterieller Endokarditisneigen.
