Las enfermedades que afectan al intestino pueden provocar una serie de signos clínicos (Tabla 20) de los que la diarrea es el más frecuente y se define como un aumento del contenido de agua fecal acom- pañado de un incremento de la frecuencia, fluidez o volumen de las heces.

La diarrea puede deberse a una afección del intestino delgado, del intestino grueso o ser una enferme- dad difusa. Puede ser el resultado de diversos mecanismos patógenos (Tabla 21).
