Los cuatro minerales que se encuentran con mayor frecuencia en los urolitos del perro son el fosfato amónico magnésico (estruvita), el oxalato cálcico, el urato amónico y la cistina (Osborne et al., 1995; Osborne et al., 1999b; Houston et al., 2004) (Figuras 2 y 3, Tabla 1). Otros tipos de urolitos menos frecuentes son el fosfato cálcico, los silicatos y ciertos medicamentos y metabolitos de medicamentos.
El oxalato cálcico y la estruvita son los minerales predominantes en los cálculos renales (nefrolitos) caninos (Ross et al., 1999). La incidencia de la urolitiasis y la composición de los urolitos pueden estar influidas por diferentes factores como la raza, el sexo, la edad, la dieta, anomalías anatómicas, infec- ciones urinarias, el pH de la orina y los tratamientos farmacológicos (Ling, 1998).
