Im Vergleich zu einem klassischen Erhaltungsfutter für einen adulten Hund muss die Diät für einen diabe- tischen Hund oder eine Hündin mit Insulinresistenz im Zusammenhang mit dem Diöstrus folgenden zentra- len Anforderungen entsprechen:

• Hohe Akzeptanz, um eine sponta- ne und regelmäßige Nahrungsauf- nahme sicherzustellen.

• Reduzierter Stärkegehalt (< 50 % Kalorien aus Kohlenhydraten): Es gibt eine Korrelation zwischen dem Stärkegehalt der Nahrung und der glykämischen Antwort beim Hund (Nguyen et al., 1998). Selbst in einem Trockenfutter kann der Stärkegehalt problemlos unter 30 % gesenkt werden. Verliert das Pankreas seine Funktion (beim Hundhäufig der Fall), muss die Insulin- dosierung bei jedem Wechsel des Fütterungsschemas sehr genau an den Stärkegehalt angepasst wer- den.
