• Im Idealfall sollten Hunde während ihres stationären Aufenthalts ihr Gewicht beibehalten (oder gegebe- nenfalls sogar erhöhen). Tägliches Wiegen sollte zur Routine zählen. Hat der Patient seit drei oder mehr Tagen nicht gefressen oder ist eine längere Nahrungskarenz vorherzu- sehen, muss die künstliche Ernährung erwogen werden.

• Die enterale Ernährung stellt die bei weitem beste Methode dar. Sie beschleunigt den Rekonvaleszenzprozess und verhindert, dass die Darmzotten atrophieren. Ist eine enterale Ernährung nicht möglich, sollte der Zeitraum, in dem der Darmtrakt umgangen wird, so kurz wie möglich gehalten werden.

• Der Energiebedarf eines hospitali- sierten Hundes entspricht in etwa dem Ruheenergiebedarf. Dieser wird auf der Basis von 70 kcal/kg KM0,75 berechnet. Dabei ist jedoch zu bedenken, dass der Energiebedarf im Einzelfall um bis zu 30 % höher sein kann. […]
