Obstipation wird definiert als eine verzögerte Kotentleerung mit verändertem Defäkationsrhythmus und übermäßig trockenem oder hartem Kot. Begleitet wird sie häufig von einer Dyschezie (schmerzhafte oder gestörte Defäkation). Die Ursachen der Obstipation sind in Tabelle 27 zusammengefasst.
Die chronische Obstipation entsteht bei lang anhaltender Kotverhaltung. Die Unfähigkeit, Kot abzusetzen, führt zur Bildung zunehmend harter und trockener Fäzes.
