Les nutriments peuvent être administrés de deux manières: par voie entérale ou paren- térale. C’est au clinicien qu’il incombe de déterminer la meilleure stratégie concernant la nutrition assistée (Figure 2).

La nutrition parentérale ne devrait être utilisée que si l’alimentation entérale est impos- sible. L’alimentation parentérale est plus compliquée à mettre en œuvre, plus onéreuse et elle est associée à un risque septique non négligeable.
