Why is the evidence base from which we draw our information for clinical decision-making so thin and weak? Why aren’t there more big, strong, studies answering all the important questions about the conditions we treat every day in our clinics?
To perform clinical research takes a big case-load, a fair amount of clinical research skill, a lot of time, and some money. Who has all these things? Very few of us indeed. And we all wait for these super-people to publish things for us to read, and then what do we do? We complain that their study isn’t perfect, or that it’s not relevant to our practice. S
o, do we just accept that this is how it always has been, is now, and forever shall be …? That the veterinary literature is doomed to remain patchy and incomplete forever, and that our claim to be a science-led profession will become less and less believable with every passing year?
