The presentation will deal with rib resection for access to both the chest and abdomen. The technique can be performed in either a standing patient or under a general anaesthetic. In most cases the chest is opened to deal with chronic pleural infections but access for removal of an intra-thoracic mass, or even to carry out some cardiac procedure is possible. Access to the cranial dorsal abdomen is mostly for nephrectomy or splenectomy.
The technique for rib resection is straightforward involving stripping the periosteum form the rib and then splitting it to enter chest or abdomen. Closure after surgery is by closure of peritoneum/pleura and periosteum, musculature, fascia and skin. Pleural drainage and removal of air is required. [...]
