Orthopaedic surgery increased a lot in the last decades becoming one of the most requested medical specialty in health care.
These advances were related to new technologies and facilities of imaging orthopaedic implants and medical devices, improvement of less invasive surgical techniques like arthroscopy and better management of the patients in pre and post-op achieving better outcomes and more confidence of the society.
However the complication rate of some surgeries raised high levels in particular when related to infection, loosening and wearing of the prosthesis and should not be ignored or minimized.
The impact of orthopaedic trauma is emphasized as well as the progress of spine surgery in the treatment of spine deformities and the capacity to perform arthroscopy in almost all the joints with proved benefits to the patients in terms of a quickly return to work and less morbidities.
In summary, one can say that orthopaedics has been giving a great contribution to the progress and quality of human life.
