Minimal invasive osteosynthesis is gaining more and more popularity in veterinary surgery. The development and affordability of advanced fixation techniques like locking implants and supporting technical supply like fluoroscopy, as well as well as the rising understanding and acceptance of biological fracture repair, has made minimal invasive techniques applicable to a wider field of surgeons. Nevertheless lack of direct visualisation of the fracture fragments and bone axis due to indirect reduction techniques and limited approaches have to be compensated by additional technical supply and experience of the surgeon.
Several studies about general principals, approaches and experiences with minimal invasive osteosynthesis in dogs have been published in the recent years. But further studies are needed to investigate if documented advantages of minimal invasive osteosynthesis in human medicine (smaller trauma, faster healing rate, lower complication rate, shorter surgical time, better cosmetic results) are transferable to our veterinary patients.
