    El objetivo de este libro es el proporcionar un tratado general y conciso sobre virología para los estudiantes veterinarios y los veterinarios. Se ha puesto particular énfasis en las características que son relevantes cada día en la clínica del veterinario. Los asistentes y técnicos veterinarios también encontrarán el libro accesible y útil.

    El origen de este libro es la sección de virología preparada por A. Wayne Roberts, en la quinta edición del libro "Essentials of Veterinary Microbiology". Este libro fue escogido por ser conciso y por hacer énfasis en la virología clínica. En este nuevo libro se mantiene lo conciso y el énfasis práctico, sin embargo, las enfermedades virales son presentadas por familias virales en vez de hacerlo por "huésped/sistema". Este enfoque taxonómico tiene la ventaja de incluir juntas a aquellas enfermedades que tienen un número de características básicas y patogénicas similares. Un ejemplo es la semejanza de las enfermedades causadas por algunos parvovirus.

    La parte introductoria del libro presenta todo el conocimiento significativo clásico, así como el más reciente, sobre la virología básica, incluyendo la taxonomía y las técnicas biológicas moleculares más recientes. El uso de estas últimas se destaca particularmente en la sección de patogenia bajo diagnóstico de laboratorio.

    Se ha intentado incluir información epidemiológica, clínica y patológica suficiente, más no excesiva, para proporcionar un recuento integral e interesante de enfermedades importantes. Para evitar el posible tedio de la recitación de hechos necesarios, además de ejercicios de laboratorio, los instructores pueden incluir casos clínicos para estudio e informes reales sobre los brotes de enfermedades virales.

    En el interés de mantener la brevedad hemos omitido todas las referencias. La disponibilidad de innumerables referencias en el Internet hace la inclusión de referencias en libros de esta clase innecesaria.

    Estamos muy agradecidos con A. Wayne Roberts, de la Universidad de Georgia, que generosamente nos permitió usar libremente su material de la 5ta edición del libro Essentials of Veterinary Microbiology.
