Equine cheek teeth (CT) diastema (pleural diastemata) was briefly described in some early literature, but over the past 15 years it has been recognised as a very common and clinically significant equine dental disorder (Dixon et al. 1999; Dixon 2010). Currently, this disorder is recognised as the main cause of oral pain and quidding in referred dental cases in the UK. Equine CT diastemata have been classified as: primary diastemata (believed to be caused by inadequate angulation of the Triadan 06 and 11 CT or from normally angulated CT developing too far apart); secondary diastemata, such as those caused by displaced (developmental or acquired) or supernumerary teeth, or by overgrowths. A recent survey showed almost all secondary diastemata to be caused by displaced CT (Dixon et al. 2013). Senile diastemata are caused by the normal tapering in of teeth in an apical direction (along with age-related loss of angulation of the 06s and 11s) and some horses have a combination of different types of diastemata.
