Introduction
There are numerous and confusing definitions of ileus and indeed post operative ileus (POI). Broadly, ileus is a functional problem with motility as opposed to being related to mechanical or physical obstructions. The definition of ileus used here will be: ileus is the syndrome of functional inhibition of propulsive bowel motility (Livingston and Passaro 1990). Ileus frequently occurs in the immediate period following abdominal surgery (POI) and constitutes a serious post operative complication in horses.
Equine ileus
Ileus is seen in both adult horses and foals, but this discussion will concentrate on syndromes seen in the adult. Intestinal dysmotility can be present in a variety of scenarios including large intestinal impactions (e.g. pelvic flexure and caecum), grass sickness, peritonitis, endotoxaemia, duodenitis/proximal jejunitis (DPJ) and of course POI.
