Introduction
Although a dystocia is a one-off setback in the mare’s breeding career, it might have a negative effect on the mare’s future fertility and quality of life. Resolving a dystocia successfully does not end in the delivery of a living foal: the prognosis for survival of the foal and mare might be essential, but also the mare’s future fertility should be maintained (Frazer 2011).
In general, palpation or ultrasonography cannot be used to predict a dystocia since the foal just acquires the correct posture and position when labour starts (Ginther 1994). Because of its unpredictability, besides proper care during a dystocia, one must ensure that the mare gets decent treatment post dystocia to avoid complications.
