Valgus/varus
If there is any suspicion that a foal is premature/dysmature, radiographs (dorsopalmar image of the carpus and lateromedial image of the tarsus) should be taken before unrestricted exercise is allowed.
Those undertaking farriery should invest in appropriate, sharp, equipment. As a minimum, this should include left and right- handed hoof knives, a chainsaw file (for sharpening), a rasp, a Dremmel or similar, and hoof nippers.
Observation should take place on a flat surface, with the foal at rest, and whilst walking. Foals like to walk behind their mothers, and several laps may be necessary to fully assess both fore- and hindlimbs with an unimpeded view. Take your time. Make notes.
There is an art to observation. Most young foals have a narrow chest, which leads to rotation of the forelimbs. Limbs should be evaluated from in front of the carpus. [...]
