Lacerations and haematomas
Horses most commonly incur a penile or preputial laceration while jumping a barrier or attempting to breed a mare over a fence. Preputial haematomas usually arise from rupture of subfascial vessels caused by a kick to the erect penis or from bending of the penis during coitus. Fresh penile and preputial wounds should be sutured, and horses with a preputial haematoma should be treated by applying a compression bandage to the penis and by hydrotherapy. Penile and preputial lacerations or haematomas can result in paraphimosis or phimosis.
Paraphimosis
Paraphimosis occurs most frequently from preputial oedema caused by trauma but may be caused by damage to penile innervation, such as from equine herpesvirus-1, disease of the spinal cord or administration of acepromazine. Trauma to the extruded penis is prevented by retaining the penis within the preputial cavity or by bandaging the penis against the abdomen.
