A complete neurological examination is warranted in horses with suspected neurological conditions, unusual gait, nonlocalisable lameness, movement disorders, unexplainable weakness and muscle atrophy, and altered behaviour or sleep, among others. The neurological examination requires observation, palpation and hearing. Simple tools such as a bright light source and forceps are also required.
