Periodontal disease is commonly encountered in equine dentistry [1]. This gives rise to the consideration about what can or should be undertaken during a routine dental appointment. The first part of any equine dental assessment involves a detailed oral examination. This involves use of a full mouth speculum, headlight and dental mirror. In order for adequate examination to be undertaken it is essential that the oral cavity is lavaged adequately to remove loose food. Large-volume dental syringes or lavaging wands are effective.
