Laboratory tests all have their limitations and should not be used in isolation. If they are not applied appropriately then there is the potential for inappropriate clinical decisions to be made, diagnoses to be missed and unnecessary treatments to be administered.
There are a number of factors that need to be considered when interpreting any laboratory result:
- Will the result of the test actually change anything?
- Is there potential for harming the patient in collecting thesample?
- What are the insurance implications of the test results?
- Is the selected test the best option for the indication? Should a single test be performed, or would a combination of tests improve accuracy?
- What is the predictive value of the test and the reference interval being used to interpret the result? Positive and negative predictive values, sensitivity and speci city are not known for all tests. Screening tests require particular scrutiny.
