There are many reasons why a horse would have nasal discharge and ideally a diagnosis would be made in order that a more informed decision could be made on 1) the risk to the affected horse if it were to travel and compete and 2) the risks posed by horses from that yard to other horses with which they come into contact. Frequently it is not possible to make a definitive diagnosis, particularly within 24 h.
