R. equi is a soil organism found worldwide. Replication of the organism in the soil can occur in certain conditions but environmental contamination is greatly increased by faecal excretion from foals. Infected foals also swallow the bacteria in sputum, with further faecal excretion. Inhalation of dust particles is the major route of infection and airborne concentrations of R. equi have an association with disease.
