Except for embryo transfer programmes, twins are an undesirable outcome, since most multiple pregnancies will result in fetal loss. Effective twin management involves:
• detection of multiple ovulation, and
• early intervention prior to embryonic fixation by 16 days post-ovulation.
Overwhelmingly, multiple pregnancies are the result of multiple ovulations. Breed plays an important role, with Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods having a higher incidence. Ovulatory inducing hormones, such as deslorelin, can increase multiple ovulations.
