There is a paucity of information regarding drug metabolism and transport in equine pregnancy. Safety data for drug use in pregnancy are equally lacking, not only in horses, but also in humans. Most of the data available regarding drug metabolism and safety have been obtained in rodent or nonhuman primate species. Because placentation varies between species, extrapolation of information about drugs between species is limited. Several general principles apply to the pharmacokinetics (what the body does to a drug) and pharmacodynamics (what the drug does to the body) of a given drug, including physiological changes during pregnancy (absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination) and placental transfer of drugs [1].
