Horses’ teeth are prone to developing sharp enamel points and overgrowths, as a result of the hypsodont nature of the teeth and the anatomy of the occlusal contact. Continued occlusal wear and simultaneous eruption of the teeth, and a symmetrical masticatory action result in a fine balance to maintain normal even wear. Any disruption in this normal occlusal anatomy or masticatory action will result in uneven wear and the development of focal overgrowths of the occlusal surface.
