Infective endocarditis is usually a bacterial, or rarely fungal, infection of the valvular or mural endocardium. The most common site of infection is the mitral valve, closely followed by the aortic valve. The tricuspid valve is affected most frequently in horses with septic jugular vein thrombophlebitis.
