Cisplatin and bleomycin are two chemotherapeutic agents that in horses are most commonly used as a local chemotherapeutic treatment for sarcoids. They can also be used against other tumours, such as squamous cell carcinomas. Cisplatin is one of the platinum-based family of antineoplastic drugs. Its mechanism of action is by interfering with DNA replication, which theoretically should kill the quickly replicating cells. Bleomycin is made by the bacterium Streptomyces verticillus and also interferes with DNA, although the exact mechanism is still unclear. Both drugs undergo renal excretion, although cisplatin is nonenzymatically degraded to protein-bound metabolites that are renally excreted, so its clearance is much longer than that of bleomycin ...
