Computed tomography uses x-ray beams and reconstructive computer technology to create tomographic slices (sections) of the area being imaged. CT has higher contrast resolution than conventional radiography allowing for a more accurate differentiation of soft tissues and fluids. Different types of fluid also have characteristic Hounsfield units, and in theory, this can help with making a diagnosis.
