Computed tomography uses x-ray beams and reconstructive computer technology to create tomographic slices (sections) of the area being imaged. CT has higher contrast resolution than conventional radiography allowing for a more accurate differentiation of soft tissues and fluids. Different types of fluid also have characteristic Hounsfield units, and in theory, this can help with making a diagnosis. This form of 3D imaging removes problems caused by superimposition, which is a major impediment when viewing radiographs of the equine head. Disadvantages of CT examination are principally cost, and in fractious patients it can occasionally be difficult to get a diagnostic scan due to movement.
