Equine practice appears to have fallen behind small animal practice when considering various factors including work– life balance. There is still a plethora of veterinary students who wish to become equine vets, but this number falls dramatically up to graduation and then again in the first few years following graduation. Why is this? This includes, but is not limited to, long hours, arduous on-call, lower pay compared with small animal practice, lonely job, performing basic nursing or grooming tasks, litigious work, high risk of injury, demanding clients, limited case exposure, limited options for career progression and limited options for parttime work ...
