Although castration is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in equine practice [1,2] it carries with it a high complication rate, most notably scrotal swelling and incisional infection. Studies have reported postoperative complications rates as high as 22.3% [3], even though all horses were administered a 5-day course of broad-spectrum prophylactic antibiotics.
