The ability to rapidly sequence and analyse microbial genomes has revolutionised pathogen research and has introduced a quantum leap in antimicrobial target discovery. This presentation will illustrate with Rhodococcus equi, the causative agent of a severe pneumonic disease of foals, how genomics may aid in deciphering the biology and virulence mechanisms of a pathogen and how this information can be applied in rational vaccine development.
