Background and importance of study
Largely anecdotal evidence indicates that veterinary practitioners involved in equine work sustain significant numbers of injuries as part of their work with horses. Knowledge of the risk of certain injuries will better inform equine veterinary surgeons of the risks to which they are exposed. Knowledge of such risks will enable newly qualified veterinary surgeons, who are considering a career in equine practice, to make more informed decisions on their chosen profession. Information such as this will also enable equine veterinary surgeons to inform horse owners, horsekeepers and trainers of the risks to which they are exposed. The aim is to provide greater justification for the use of appropriate methods of restraint (such as sedatives) to minimise the risk of injury, where the veterinary surgeon sees fit.
