    Les "problèmes de dos" causent fréquemment des contre-performances et représentent une part importante des consultations orthopédiques. L'évaluation de la colonne vertébrale comprend des actes spécifiques intégrés dans un protocole sémiologique classique et complet de l'appareil locomoteur, afin d'objectiver une dorsalgie et d'en évaluer les relations avec une boiterie éventuelle. Le praticien réalise l'anamnèse, insistant sur les anomalies de comportement et leurs circonstances d'apparition. Un examen du cheval en station est ensuite réalisé. Le praticien procède à une inspection visuelle de l'attitude et de la conformation du cheval. Une palpation et une pression digitée ponctiforme sont effectuées sur l'axe vertébral. Puis le praticien réalise une mobilisation active et passive, unilatérale et bilatérale de la colonne vertébrale. L'exploration rectale permettra la détection du syndrome sciatique et également, en association avec les tests de mobilisation des postérieurs, la différenciation entre lombo-sacralgie et boiterie d'un membre postérieur. Le praticien examine ensuite le cheval aux différentes allures sur terrain dur et souple, puis réalise des tests fonctionnels (flexion, extension, abduction). Le test du surfaix réalisé ensuite permet notamment de révéler une dorsalgie et d'établir ses interférences avec une boiterie. Le praticien pourra ainsi déterminer, à l'aide d'éventuelles anesthésies sémiologiques, quelle est la pathologie vraisemblablement prédominante.
