It is important to understand the gastrointestinal ecosystem and digestive physiology in order to be able to prevent gastrointestinal problems. This review addresses each of the major gastrointestinal compartments (stomach, small intestine and large intestine) with respect to microbiological ecosystems and their role in nutrient digestion and pathophysiological events that are caused by not respecting the natural feeding behavior and physiology of horses (gastric ulcers, malabsorption, and large intestinal colic and chronic diarrhea).
