Abstract It is possible once more to vaccinate horses against infection with Streptococcus equi (S. equi) thanks to the re-launch of the Equilis StrepE vaccine. This presentation reviews the currently available literature surrounding this, other commercially available strangles vaccines and a new multi-component protein-based vaccine, which is currently in development. Emerging data illustrates the ever-evolving global population of S. equi and highlights the potential impact of population changes on the effectiveness of available vaccines. The ability to use vaccination alongside conventional biosecurity and screening procedures will be critical to the prevention of strangles in the future and may enable us to finally break the hold that this disease has on the global equine industry.
