Abstract : Equine Metabolic Syndrome describes a collection of common factors frequently seen in horses and ponies that are susceptible to laminitis. A triple approach targeting diet, exercise and possibly pharmacologic treatment is recommended for control of EMS and laminitis risk. Undoubtedly diet is the main factor deserving of close attention in EMS cases. Significant loss of adipose tissue must be achieved and success entirely depends on a fully committed owner who is willing to take total control of the diet. Grazing is strictly not permissible during a weight loss programme. Each dietary constituent must be accurately weighed and carefully selected for nutrient quality. The diet will be forage-based with supplementation of protein and micronutrients to ensure adequate balance. Total dietary intake is likely to require restriction to between 1.0-1.5% bodyweight daily as dry matter and careful adjustments are often required according to response as measured by frequent monitoring of body condition and weight. Additional benefits may be gained from increased exercise and also pharmacologic products such as L-thyroxine and metformin hydrochloride. […]
