Il y a trois sortes d’ataxie: l’ataxie vestibulaire, l’ataxie reliée aux maladies du cervelet et l’ataxie de proprioception, le plus souvent rencontrée dans les maladies de la moelle épinière.
Ataxie vestibulaire
Cette ataxie est probablement la plus facile à diagnostiquer. Elle est, règle générale, accompagnée d’une tête penchée. L’animal a tendance à marcher vers le côté de la tête penchée et même à tomber vers ce côté. Ne pas confondre avec l’animal qui tourne en rond sans la présence d’une tête penchée. Ce syndrome est associé aux maladies du thalamus, le tournis étant ipsilatéral à la lésion. Tel que mentionné lors de l’examen neurologique, la meilleure façon d’évaluer s’il y a tête penchée, c’est de tirer un ligne imaginaire entre les yeux. La ligne devrait être parfaitement horizontale.
