The use of honey in wounds is not new. We know the ancient Egyptians used honey several thousand years ago. Many written reports of the efficacy of honey have reached us through the mists of time. In 50 AD for example, Dioscorides wrote that honey is ‘good for all rotten and hollow ulcers’, and today in human medicine honey is widely used for many wound types but perhaps most notably for the control of pressure and diabetic ulcers (1) and for the treatment of wounds associated with necrotising fasciitis (2). So even now, 2000 years after Dioscorides wrote his piece of advice, honey remains one of the best therapeutic options for ‘all rotten and hollow ulcers’ ...
