    La osteoartrosis (OA) no es un problema local que afecta a una o varias articulaciones, sino una enfermedad sistémica, y debe tratarse como tal. El enfoque multimodal, que incluye la rehabilitación, es el adecuado para esta enfermedad.

    La osteoartrosis (OA) está presente en la clínica diaria constantemente, y todos estamos
    ya muy familiarizados con ella, ¿verdad? Recordemos que los estudios estiman una prevalencia de OA del 20 % en perros mayores de 1 año1, y la reconocen como una causa de eutanasia humanitaria por sí misma, o que favorece la decisión cuando hay otras patologías.
    Cuando vemos una analítica alterada, intentamos ponerle solución: adaptamos la dieta, añadimos medicación y realizamos controles. Explicamos al propietario la situación: qué significa ese número rojo para su mascota, qué señales de alarma pueden aparecer y qué debemos esperar. ¿Por qué no hacemos lo mismo con la OA? ¿Por qué asumir que es inevitable? ¿Por qué limitarnos a un único enfoque terapéutico? En definitiva, ¿por qué conformarnos?

    Si bien es cierto que no existe una cura para la OA, disponemos de muchas
    herramientas a nuestro alcance (y del propietario) para mejorar de forma notable  la calidad de vida del animal y, consecuentemente prolongar su esperanza de vida. Es importante tener en cuenta que la OA no es un problema local que afecta a una o varias articulaciones, sino
    una enfermedad sistémica, y debe tratarse como tal.

    El enfoque de un paciente con OA siempre debe ser multimodal (figura 1). Desde nuestro centro de rehabilitación lo planteamos como un puzle: tenemos a nuestra disposición diferentes piezas y debemos encajarlas todas para obtener la imagen completa de un abordaje eficaz. También debemos hacer partícipe al propietario de este proceso, explicarle cómo vamos a actuar y el porqué. Es esencial concienciar al propietario de que la OA no es parte del envejecimiento natural, sino una enfermedad.

    integral del paciente con OA y te explique cómo la rehabilitación puede ayudar a los animales, sus propietarios y a ti.
