Key information
Presenter: Danielle Thomas, DVM, DACVECC
In this presentation participants will learn the principles of fluid balance between the various body compartments (intravascular space, intracellular space, and interstitial space). The impact of various disease processes on these compartments will be discussed. Using this knowledge, the participants will then delve in to the principles of fluid resuscitation in a collection of medical conditions including trauma, intra-cavitary blood loss, circulatory collapse, and shock states. The participants will learn what factors must be considered in developing a fluid plan, the various philosophies of fluid resuscitation, and the different types of fluids which are available for use. Information will also be provided on the process of patient assessment and determination of response to therapy. At the completion of the presentation, the participants will understand the factors to consider in selecting a resuscitation fluid, the dose, speed, and manner in which fluids should be administered, and the process by which one assesses resuscitation success.
