Description: This course is a solid review of the equine musculoskeletal system, and covers terminology, vocabulary, palpation of surface anatomy and muscle location.
Educational Objectives: This course is designed for as a review for Licensed Professionals working in the field of equine therapies.
This course is optional for licensed equine veterinarians but is required for all other ASTR participants. The 172-page course manual contains more relevant content than most onsite anatomy courses that you will attend!
Note: you will receive a confirmation email, as well as a STUDENT ENROLLMENT AGREEMENT and Academy of Animal Sport Science school information. As soon as your Student Agreement is completed and uploaded, you will be sent a download link for the Module 1 course materials.
Course Registration
When prompted electronically during course registration, Licensed Professionals (veterinarian, veterinary technician/nurse, chiropractor, osteopathy, physical/physiotherapist) must upload a copy of their currently-held license.
All other course participants must upload a copy of evidence of the highest level of education (minimum: high school/equivalent diploma).
Learning Outcomes:
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- identify the skeletal system and locate the regions of the skeleton on horses,
- understand the veterinary terminology, vocabulary and directional terms enabling the student to communicate with others in the field and continue with self-learning exercises,
- apply palpation skills for the equine surface anatomy and compare them among horses,
- distinguish and label the four layers of common muscles of the horse to assist future learning,
- compare horse’s skeletal regions and be able to note the differences between horses as well note the asymmetries of the individual horse,
- understand the terms related to movement of the horse,
- evaluate the musculoskeletal symmetry of the horse to determine if there are differences which need to be addressed by a health care professional.
Requirements of Students: A computer and internet access is required for students to download the text and documents. The internet connection should be high speed preferable (cable, LAN, DS etc.) Students should have computer and internet access to view suggested links as well as videos on You Tube. While not required to have a Facebook account, students have the opportunity to access the same documents on the Facebook group established for this course.

Methods of Instruction and Delivery: This is a self-paced course. Although it is designed to be completed in less than two months, we do allow the participant one year from the time of registration to complete at home. The complete course manual (172 pages) will be provided via download directly to your computer to save or print. You do not have to purchase the text.
There are Additional Learning Activities within the manual which are required components of the course, not optional. If you do not complete them you will miss a good deal of the course.
When you have completed reviewing all the course content, you will request the open book final online exam and you have a time limit of 2 months to complete the exam. No worries! You have 3 attempts to pass.
