Key information
During the AAEP’s 360° Ophthalmology course, you’ll develop, through lectures and small-group wet labs, the knowledge and skills to thoroughly examine the equine eye, recognize disease and disorders, and make treatment recommendations and surgical decisions. Core concepts of ophthalmology will be emphasized throughout the course. Upon completion, you’ll have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed and judicious decisions about ophthalmic disease in your equine patients.
Wet labs under the supervision of an ophthalmologist will equip you to understand and perform:
- the ophthalmic examination, including anterior and posterior segments, ultrasonography of the eye and orbit, and ophthalmic photography techniques (on live animals)
- ophthalmic blocks for diagnostic and treatment purposes (on cadavers) surgical approaches to the adnexa and placement of SPLs (on cadavers) and enucleation corneal
- surgery, including corneal suturing, keratectomy, and conjunctival grafts (on cadaver pig eyes)
This exceptional learning opportunity is being held at The University of Florida in Gainesville. Limited to 30 participants with a maximum instructor-to-participant ratio of 1:4, this course will offer extensive hands-on experience and one-on-one instruction with board-certified equine ophthalmologists.
